How to detox your body naturally

Detox programs might be all the rage, yet many employ extreme measures. Some promote fasting for extended periods of time for example, whilst others the use of powerful laxatives, all of which can have a detrimental effect on your health in the long run. An entirely natural detox on the other hand, which seeks to harness what’s already on offer from Mother Nature, can provide an almost unlimited number of health benefits. Indeed, a 100% natural detox, which takes an altogether more positive approach to cleansing, can result in strengthened immunity, increased energy, sustained weight loss and beautiful skin and hair, as well as an enhanced sense of physical and mental wellbeing. And, according to the latest research, a regular detox may boost your life expectancy by some 20 to 30 per cent!

How to detox your body naturally

But before you discover how to detox your body naturally, let’s take a brief look at why detoxing is necessary in the first place.

Why detox in the first place?

A heavily polluted world and, in particular, the modern Western diet, exposes your body to more toxins, in the form of pesticides, fertilisers, preservatives, flavour enhancers, food colorants and preservatives, than it is sometimes able to handle or remove. These toxins build up in organs such as your liver, where they can eventually cause an imbalance or disease.

An accumulation of such toxins may manifest in one or more of the following warning signs:

  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Skin conditions
  • Allergies
  • Infections
  • Bloating
  • Menstrual problems
  • Mental confusion
  • Headaches and migraines

Left unchecked, these symptoms can ultimately lead to chronic conditions, such as obesity, arthritis, depression, heart disease and even cancer.

Detoxification, which has been practiced by a variety of different cultures throughout the ages, and is an integral component of both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, encourages the elimination of chemicals, metabolic waste and other toxins from your blood, tissue, organs and cells. It does this by focusing on cleansing and nourishing your body with those nutrients that are known to specifically support and accelerate your body’s own natural cleansing process, including vitamins, enzymes, minerals, antioxidants, chlorophyll, protein and fibre.

How to detox naturally

Thankfully, there are a number of small, practical changes that you can make to your daily diet and exercise regime, which will allow you to detox naturally, without resorting to the more drastic actions previously mentioned.

5 steps to a natural detox

Below are five simple steps that can help you to achieve a natural, yet effective detox each and every day.

1) Reduce your intake of toxins

You will dramatically reduce the number of toxins you ingest if you:

  • Stop smoking – cigarettes contain more than 4,000 chemicals, including 43 carcinogenic compounds and 400 toxins, such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide and arsenic.
  • Avoid alcohol and coffee – drink spring water, green tea and green smoothies instead. Organic matcha green tea, which is shade grown and thus contains more chlorophyll (a natural plant pigment that is known to cleanse and protect the liver), is an ideal choice. Aloe Vera juice, which contains a number of ingredients that help to neutralise toxins, cleanse the colon and stimulate cell regeneration, is another.
  • Eliminate refined sugars – which have been chemically bleached and are made from pure, refined carbs that, in excess, can result in the formation of ‘toxic metabolite’ such as pyruvic acid. Replace them with natural superfood sweeteners, such as organic stevia sweetener or organic lucuma powder instead.
  • Cut down on processed saturated fats – which contain toxic trans fats. Shun convenience foods and swap your standard cooking oil for healthier varieties, such as extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil.
  • Purchase organic food products wherever possible – as these contain a limited number of pesticides, artificial additives and other toxins. Better still, grow your own!
  • Limit your exposure to chemicals – by choosing natural household cleaners and personal care products, such as shampoo, deodorants and toothpaste.

2) Increase your fibre intake

A diet high in fibre helps to both cleanse your intestines and regulate your bowel movements, and therefore assists in the quick and efficient elimination of harmful toxins and pollutants.

Consume plenty of fibre-rich foods, including:

3) Supplement your diet with detoxing superfoods

There are a number of special superfoods that are renowned for their powers of detox. Try incorporating one or more of the following into your daily diet:

  • Organic chlorella powder – organic chlorella powder contains large quantities of chlorophyll, which protects your liver and cleanses the blood. Clean blood in turn ensures that metabolic waste is removed and carried away from bodily tissue. Chlorella algae also feature tough, fibrous cell walls that have a binding effect on toxins. And the protein in chlorella clings to damaging heavy metals, allowing for swifter and easier removal.
  • Organic spirulina powder – organic spirulina powder boasts an impressive chlorophyll content, in addition to a high iron bioavailability – iron forms part of the oxygen carrying protein, haemoglobin, which helps keeps your blood healthy.
  • Organic wheatgrass powder – organic wheatgrass powder consists of around 70% chlorophyll and is exceptionally alkaline, which means that it can help your body to maintain a healthy pH balance, purify your blood and expel harmful toxins.
  • Organic cacao nibs – organic cacao nibs are not just a tasty treat! Indeed, cacao nibs contain fibre, which as you now know, cleanses the intestines and regulates bowel movements, for the efficient elimination of toxins. They’re also loaded with antioxidants, which improve the function of the endothelial cells that line your body’s circulatory system and thus play a crucial role in the cleansing and detoxification of your body, magnesium, which prevents the build up of acid and neutralises toxins, iron, which purifies the blood, manganese which aids in the oxygenation of the blood and the formation of haemoglobin, chromium, a trace element that helps to detoxify your liver from alcohol that builds up during the fermentation process of sugars and starches and has a major influence on blood cleanse, and lastly zinc, which is essential for the healthy function of your liver and skin – two major organs that are both involved in the removal of bodily toxins.

4) Reduce your stress levels

Stress is caused by the release of stress hormones, which in large quantities can also create toxins. Gentle exercise, such as walking or yoga, is a great way of relieving stress. Incidentally, a recent review of some 37 studies in the Netherlands, involving almost 3,000 people, revealed that yoga is also linked to a reduced risk of high blood pressure and cholesterol.

In addition to regular exercise, try adding a variety of natural stress relievers to your diet, such as:

  • Organic Ashwagandha powder organic ashwagandha powder has been proven to reduce cortisol levels by up to 26 percent. Cortisol is a stress hormone and elevated levels are a clear indication of chronic stress.
  • Organic maca powder – maca is an adaptogen that according to David Wolfe, author of ‘Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future’, can proactively ‘counter adverse sources of stress and allow the body to adapt to stressful conditions’. In fact, just like organic ashwagandha powder, organic maca powder helps to manage the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol, and thus actively eliminate stress.
  • Brazilian ginseng powder – another natural adaptogen, Brazilian ginseng helps your body to achieve balance, resulting in improved resistance to infections and environmental stress.
  • Reishi mushroom extract powder – again, regarded by many as an adaptogen, reishi mushroom extract significantly improves the health of your adrenal system and provides welcome natural relief from insomnia, anxiety and stress.

5) Gently flush your system with the aid of a salt sole

Salt water acts as a natural laxative that flushes toxins, including lead, mercury and arsenic, from your gastrointestinal system, whilst simultaneously balancing your body’s acid/alkaline levels. You can prepare a salt sole by popping one tablespoon of pure and unrefined salt crystals, such as Himalayan pink salt crystals, into a jar and then topping with (spring) water, before leaving overnight. Adding one teaspoon of homemade salt sole to a glass of water every morning will cleanse your digestive tract without any of the harmful effects linked to commercial medications. You can also use Himalayan pink salt directly in your bath to lower acidity and inflammation, and at the same time, balance the pH of your skin.
